Applying For Canada VISA

Yearly Canada Offers permanent residency to over 200,000 immigrants and you have an equal opportunity as everyone else. Canada is a land of limitless opportunities and the benefits of becoming a permanent resident in Canada is enormous.

With a permanent resident status, you can live and work in Canada on a permanent basis. However, the permanent residency card is issued for 5 years and is renewable.

You must be physically present in Canada for at least 2 years in every 5 year period. This means that out of the 5 years, you can spend up to 3 years outside Canada during the 5 year period.

However, if you do not meet the permanent residency obligations, you will be notified accordingly by the immigration officers that you have lost your permanent residency status.

You can submit an appeal within 60 days after receiving the notification of losing your status, the immigration officer may consider your appeal on compassionate and humanitarian grounds before making a final decision about your status.

It is advisable to inform the immigration, refugees and citizenship Canada (IRCC) if you will be out of Canada for an extended period of time and intimate them when you are likely to return.

The Permanent Resident (PR) Card

The PR card is proof that you have a permanent resident status in Canada and you must present your PR card and passport when entering Canada. Permanent residents travelling outside Canada who is not carrying their PR need to apply for a permanent resident travel document before returning to Canada.

Permanent residents have enormous opportunities which include

  • The Right to receive most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage.
  • Protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • The Right to apply for Canadian citizenship after a period of residence.
  • The Right to live, work or study anywhere in Canada.

The only difference between a Canadian citizen and a permanent resident is the right to join the military, the right to hold public office and vote. Like earlier stated, the privileges of a permanent resident can be withdrawn if the holder is convicted of a serious offence and could be deported.

You are also required by law to pay taxes and abide by all Canadian laws.

How To Become A Permanent Resident In Canada

There are 5 main categories to obtain permanent resident status in Canada.

  • Express Entry Category: This immigration stream offers expedited immigration procedures to skilled foreign workers.
  • Business Immigration: This visa stream is for foreigners with the intention to start a business or invest in Canada
  • Family Class Immigration: This visa stream offer families in Canada to reunite with their loved ones.
  • Canadian Experience Class: International students or temporary skilled workers who wish to change their residency status qualifies for this visa stream.
  • Provincial Nominee Programs: Provinces and territories can nominate qualified candidates who meet their labour market demands.

Loosing Your permanent Residency Status

Loosing your permanent residency status can be possible in any of the following circumstances

  • You voluntarily renounce your permanent resident status
  • An adjudicator determines you are no longer a permanent resident after an inquiry or PRTD appeal
  • A removal order is made against you
  • By becoming a Canadian citizen
